Kuafu Chasing the Sun

In ancient times, in the northern wilderness, there stood a towering and majestic mountain that reached high into the clouds.

Deep in the forest lived a group of incredibly strong giants.

Their leader was Kua Fu, the grandson of the underworld god "Hou Tu" and the son of "Xin."

Thus, this group of people was called the Kua Fu clan. They were robust and strong, tall and imposing, with unwavering willpower and extraordinary spirit.

Moreover, they were kind-hearted, hardworking, and brave, living a life of peace without competing with others, enjoying their freedom.

At that time, the earth was desolate, with venomous snakes and ferocious beasts rampant, making life excruciatingly difficult for the people.

In order to ensure the survival of his tribe, Kua Fu would lead everyone to fight against floods and fierce beasts every day.

Kua Fu often hung the ferocious yellow snakes he caught as decorations from his ears, proudly waving them in his hands.

One year, the weather was extremely hot; the scorching sun beat down on the earth, scorching the crops, withering trees, and causing rivers to dry up.

People were suffering unbearably from the heat, and many from the Kua Fu clan died.

Seeing this, Kua Fu felt very sad. He looked up at the sun and told his tribe, "The sun is truly detestable. I will chase the sun and catch it, making it listen to our commands." Upon hearing this, his tribe members immediately tried to dissuade him.

Some said, "You mustn't go; the sun is so far away, you'll surely exhaust yourself."

Others said, "The sun is too hot; you will be roasted to death."

However, Kua Fu was determined, vowing to capture the sun and make it heed the people's commands, serving everyone.

He looked at his troubled tribe members and said, "For everyone's happy life, I must go."

As the sun rose from the sea, Kua Fu bid farewell to his people and, filled with ambition, set off from the east coast towards the direction of the rising sun, beginning his journey to chase the sun.

The sun moved swiftly across the sky, while Kua Fu ran like the wind on the ground, desperately pursuing it.

He crossed mountains and rivers, shaking the earth with his footsteps, making it roar and sway.

Whenever Kua Fu tired, he would take a brief nap, shaking the dirt out of his shoes onto the ground, which then formed a large mound of earth.

When he was hungry, he would gather wild fruits to satisfy his hunger; sometimes, Kua Fu would also cook. He would use three stones to prop up a pot, and these three stones became three towering mountains standing several kilometers high.

As Kua Fu chased after the sun, he found himself getting closer, and his confidence grew stronger.

The nearer he got to the sun, the thirstier he became, and merely fetching river water would no longer quench his thirst.

However, he was unafraid and constantly encouraged himself, saying, "I am almost there; I will catch the sun, and people's lives will become happy."

After nine days and nights, Kua Fu finally caught up with the sun at the place where it set.

The red-hot fiery orb was right before Kua Fu's eyes, and golden rays shone down upon him.

Kua Fu joyfully opened his arms, wanting to embrace the sun, but it was scorchingly hot, and he felt both thirsty and exhausted.

他就跑到黄河边,一口气把黄河之水喝干;他又跑到渭河边,把渭河水也喝光,仍不解渴;

He then ran to the Yellow River and drank it dry in one go; next, he reached the Wei River and drank that dry too but still felt thirsty.

Kua Fu then ran north where there were vast marshes that had ample water to quench his thirst.

However, before he could reach the marsh, he collapsed and died from thirst along the way.

As Kua Fu lay dying, a sense of regret filled his heart; he still worried for his tribe. Therefore, he threw his wooden staff away.

Wherever the wooden staff landed, lush peach orchards suddenly sprang forth.

These peach orchards flourished all year round, providing shade for passing travelers, while the fresh peaches quenched the thirst of hardworking people, allowing them to relieve their fatigue and rejuvenate for their journeys.
